South Dakota’s first year of sanction boxing came to a close a century ago.
The Dec. 21, 1924, edition of The Deadwood Daily Pioneer Times reported State Treasurer J.L. Driscoll received the first check from the State Athletic Commission following its inaugural year of operating boxing matches throughout the state. Half of the proceeds from fees collected went to the South Dakota Department of the American Legion, the other half to the South Dakota Children’s Home Society, in accordance with the 1923 boxing bill adopted by the Legislature.
