Believed to be the first camel ever born in South Dakota, “Goldie” arrived as the newest animal at the Great Plains Zoo 50 years ago this week.

According to a May 13, 1974, article in the Sioux Falls Argus Leader, the 75-pound calf was the offspring of camels Abu Bekr (mother) and Zor (father).
