A century ago this week, South Dakota was cleaning up in the aftermath of one of the most powerful and deadly storms in state history.

The June 14, 1924, summer storm carved a path through South Dakota during the overnight hours.

Moving east, the system swept across the Black Hills and west river plains before running into a strong opposing wind at Pierre, stoking a night of havoc and terror throughout the eastern half of the state, according to the Rapid City Journal.
