SCOUTING REPORT | Thunder Road at 30, cleaning the Mighty Mo, delusions of grandeur, Sturgis Rally centenarian

What started as a conversation about go-cart tracks more than 30 years ago at a birthday party eventually turned into a staple of family entertainment in South Dakota. Now, Thunder Road Family Fun Park is celebrating its 30th year this summer.
That birthday discussion led brothers John and Scott Sperry and their brother-in-law, Al Novstrup, to visit nearly 100 go-kart tracks around the country. In 1993 the family went to a go-kart convention.
“Ironically, it was at this convention that they were told by industry experts that a go-kart track would never work in a town with less than 100,000 in population or without a large tourism draw,” according to the company’s history. “Fortunately, this idea was disproved by the success of Wylie Thunder Road of Aberdeen.”
