Stephen Bakken was a 23-year-old teacher when a cement vault was buried in Melgaard Park in Aberdeen 50 years ago this year, marking the 200th anniversary of the United States. The time capsule contained 200 containers, including a square Tupperware box Bakken had packed with tokens of the day.
The time capsule was retrieved and opened in April in celebration of the country’s 250th anniversary. Bakken was on hand to witness the opening.
Alas, as The Aberdeen Insider reported, time had not been kind.
“Water had infiltrated the vault, and many of the containers and items were covered in black mold and mildew,” the paper reported.
