The start of snowmobile season on the state’s official trail system got underway Dec. 15. But much of the recreational route network was missing an important element: snow.

As the state entered the Christmas season, most of South Dakota was wanting for snow. A map of current conditions from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association shows that South Dakota has virtually no snow west of the Missouri River. Indeed, the National Weather Service reports that Rapid City had received no meaningful snow by the start of snowmobile season.

Eastern South Dakota has gotten some snow – Sioux Falls has had 18.1 inches so far this season, about 6 inches more than normal. But a dose of warm weather threatened to melt much of that snow cover.
