SCOUTING REPORT | S.D.’s Rose Bowl coaches, flowering Rose Bowl floats, U.S.A. joins NGO’s hellscape list

South Dakota left a bit of its football legacy at the Rose Bowl prior to this year’s clash between the Ohio State Buckeyes and Oregon Ducks – a contest the Buckeyes dominated in a 41-21 victory.
A marker honoring Joe Salem and his two sons, Tim and Brad, was in place at the iconic stadium in Pasadena, California, by kickoff. The three men had all coached in a Rose Bowl game. Joe Salem played for the Minnesota Golden Gophers after graduating from Sioux Falls’ Cathedral High School in 1956, including on the squad of Minnesota’s national championship team in 1960. He then joined the school’s coaching staff, where they played in the Rose Bowl in 1962.
Tim Salem was on the coaching staff of Arizona State University in 1987’s Rose Bowl, and Brad coached in the iconic game in 2014. Joe said his grandson had the placard made.
