SCOUTING REPORT | Quality quarter horses, civics performers, America’s field trip, new record keeper

For the first time in more than 20 years, South Dakota State University’s Horse Unit sold horses from its herd in a public sale. The program, located in the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences, has been recognized by the American Quarter Horse Association for its breeding program for more than 70 years. The herd typically increases by 10 to 13 foals each spring.
“We have worked for years to build a herd that has a combination of very calm demeanor but still high performance and eye appeal that results in good all-around horses,” said Rosie Nold, an assistant department head of animal science.
