President Donald Trump’s executive order this month making English the official language of the United States is not unfamiliar territory in 30 states where English is already the official language, including South Dakota where it’s been the common language since 1995.

But among those 30 states, only three recognize an indigenous language as a co-official language, according to research by Ballotpedia. South Dakota lawmakers amended the common language law in 2019 to add the language of the O’ceti Sakowin, the dialects of the Lakota, Dakota and Nakota of the Great Sioux Nation.

Alaska and Hawaii also have co-official languages with their indigenous peoples.
