If you encounter groups of sailors roaming Sioux Falls next month, don’t be alarmed. We haven’t suddenly become oceanfront property.
But the Navy has its share of recruits from land-locked states like South Dakota. And from Aug. 4-10, 50 to 75 sailors will be in the community for Navy Week. The Navy is reaching out into communities as it prepares for its 250th anniversary celebration this fall.
Navy Week began 20 years ago and was designed to bring the Navy to communities that don’t have a significant Naval presence near them. Sioux Falls has hosted two previous Navy Weeks – the last in 2016.

The USS Battleship South Dakota Memorial is the patriotic place to visit July 4. Nearly 7,000 men served on the ship during WWII and only a few are still alive today.
