SCOUTING REPORT | Celebrating Sousa, the making of Mount Rushmore, saving rhinos, military friendly
A weekly digest of interesting local, state, national and even international developments
Few musicians get the patriotic juices flowing as well as John Philip Sousa. Known as “The March King,” Sousa wrote and performed some of America’s most recognizable songs that coincided with the rise of the United States during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
South Dakota State University will host “A Sousa Symposium” on April 10-11 to celebrate Sousa’s legacy in music and American history. The symposium is supported by a Chairman’s Grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities as part of its Celebrate America! Initiative. The symposium is connected to the 250th anniversary of the country’s founding.
The symposium will bring scholars, performers and historic collections together at SDSU’s Oscar Larson Performing Arts Center.
