The militias that formed the first line of defense at the start of the American Revolution proved to be effective at the onset of the war, but their weaknesses were also evident as the British escalated military efforts to force the colonies into submission. The Continental Congress concluded the colonies needed a united, professionalized military. Thus, the Continental Army was born, with none other than George Washington as its leader.
There would be trying times for sure in the next eight years, but the colonies and the Continental Army, along with its militia allies and fledgling Navy and Marine Corps, would grind out a victory that resulted in independence.
