SCOUTING REPORT | A South Dakota white bison, Rapid's recycling boon, mowing down monks, learning about the range
A weekly digest of interesting local, state, national and even international developments
Wylie Park in Aberdeen typically features bison calves in its petting zoo during the summer, and this summer is no different. This year there are three calves. But one of them isn’t like the rest: It’s all white, a rarity, reports The Aberdeen Insider.
Wylie Park Manager Mark Grote was willing to accept the orphan from the Coyote Trail Buffalo Ranch near Onaka, but before it went on display, Grote wanted to make sure it would not be offensive to Native Americans, who view white bison as sacred. So Grote placed a call to the Bureau of Indian Affairs to determine if it would be insulting to put the animal in the petting park.
A BIA official told him it would not be offensive, Grote told The Insider.
