Rounds bill would require USPS to consider rural areas before downsizing
Proposal comes after USPS pauses plans for downsizing in South Dakota
A bill that would force the U.S. Postal Service to consider the consequences on rural areas should the USPS make plans to downsize has been introduced in Congress.
The measure is sponsored by Sen. Mike Rounds and Sen. Richard Durbin of Illinois.
Current USPS policies for facility closures do not require the agency to take into account how rural areas or highly rural areas are affected as long as the closure gains efficiencies, according to a news release from Rounds’ office.
The issue has come to the forefront in eastern South Dakota in recent months as the postal service is contemplating converting regional processing and distribution centers in Huron and Sioux Falls to local processing centers.
