When judges in South Dakota return to their benches after their Independence Day break, they’ll have new sentencing guidelines to hand down to the state’s most violent offenders.
The so-called “truth in sentencing” measure championed by law enforcement and law-and-order politicians last winter goes into effect on July 1, along with dozens of other new laws that cleared the Legislature before being signed by Gov. Kristi Noem this spring.
The new prison sentencing schedule targets repeat violent offenders and requires certain inmates serve more of their sentences before becoming eligible for parole. Sen. Brent Hoffman led the charge on getting the parole-reform package to the governor’s desk.
