Property tax relief for disabled veterans in South Dakota divides GOP lawmakers
Some lawmakers warn targeted relief could undercut push for statewide property tax changes
Permanently disabled military veterans don’t pay property taxes on the first $200,000 of their home’s value in South Dakota.
And it’ll stay that way after a proposal to raise the home-value exemption to $300,000 for qualifying veterans stalled this week in the state Legislature.
A property tax relief bill authored by Sen. Joy Hohn earned support from only a third of the Hartford Republican’s chamber mates Friday, outnumbered by senators skeptical of the need, effectiveness and politics around carve-outs and shifting tax burdens onto other property owners.
