Police warn of scammers using family distress claims
Despite increase in various frauds, report finds South Dakotans among fewest targeted
The Sioux Falls Police Department is warning residents about a rise in phone scams in which callers claim to be connected to a family member who is in distress and urgently needs help.
Police said the scammers often pressure victims to go to specific locations to wire money, portraying the request as necessary to help the supposed family member. In some cases, authorities say the callers may be using artificial intelligence to mimic the voice of a relative.
