Next Sioux Falls mayor likely to back more government surveillance

Expect more police surveillance in Sioux Falls over the next four years.

As South Dakota’s largest city readies to transfer power from Mayor Paul TenHaken to a new administration at City Hall, all but one candidate seeking the corner office at 224 W. Ninth St. say they support expanding the Sioux Falls Police Department’s use of surveillance technology to catch bad guys.

But Christine Erickson, Greg Jamison, Joe Batcheller and Jamie Smith joined David Zokaites in cautioning that government data collection on citizens and their movements can encroach on privacy expectations — and demands — of Sioux Falls residents.
