Lead cannabis proponent says he won't bring back ballot initiative in 2026
Matthew Schweich says he won't be behind fourth effort should voters reject recreational marijuana in 2024
The man behind efforts to legalize recreational marijuana through the ballot box won’t return if his organization’s effort in 2024 comes up short.
Matthew Schweich, executive director of South Dakotans for Better Marijuana Laws (SDBML), says that should voters reject Initiated Measure 29 in November he won’t be behind a campaign in 2026 attempting to do the same thing.
“If they say no, we are done, at least I am,” Schweich said. “But I believe they will say yes this time.”
