PIERRE – A divided House Education Committee on Monday sent House Bill 1205 to the House Appropriations Committee without recommendation after failing to agree on whether South Dakota should require annual education funding increases to keep pace with inflation.

Supporters say the change is needed to prevent quiet cuts to classrooms and protect teacher pay, while opponents warn it would create costly expectations the state may not be able to meet in a tight budget year.

PIERRE – The Department of Corrections would be required to transport discharged inmates to their home county if that’s where they wanted to go.
