Jury delivers split verdict in Rapid City hotel discrimination lawsuit
Grand Gateway sued after former owner made post-murder Facebook post against Native Americans
A jury in Rapid City ruled late Friday that a hotel and its owners discriminated against Native Americans, but it also ruled the group behind the lawsuit was a “nuisance.”
The jury awarded NDN Collective, the activist group that brought the suit against Retsel Corp., $1, an amount the group says it requested during the trial. At the time NDN filed the lawsuit in 2022, its demand was $1 million, according to court records.
The jury also awarded Retsel – owner of the Grand Gateway Hotel – $812, finding that the NDN had acted as a nuisance. The jury found in favor of NDN Collective on Retsel’s claim that NDN defamed the hotel and one of its owners.
