Judge extends restraining order barring feds from deporting Mines student
Grad student's chance at graduation had been threatened after visa revoked
A federal judge Friday extended the temporary restraining order against the Department of Homeland Security from terminating the status of a foreign student at the South Dakota School of Mines.
Judge Karen Schreier also extended the restraining order to barring Homeland Security from removing Priya Saxena from South Dakota. The order was extended to May 16.
Saxena faced possible deportation after federal officials moved in April to terminate her record in a database known as the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS). Had that happened, her ability to graduate with a doctorate in chemical and biological engineering on May 10 could have been jeopardized.
