Hunter safety advocates in South Dakota tout pink apparel
South Dakota lawmakers, sportsmen and women want more options when it comes to what they can wear in the field
South Dakota hunters could soon have more apparel options when they take the fields for pheasants or head up their tree stands.
Blaze pink would be added as a recognized hunter safety color under House Bill 1228, which received a 68-1 vote in the South Dakota House of Representatives Wednesday. Blaze orange is the only option available to hunters right now under state law, which requires anyone hunting with a firearm — excluding turkey and mountain lion hunters — must wear an orange hat, cap, shirt, jacket, vest, coverall or poncho above the waist.
Bill sponsor Rep. Jessica Bahmuller said the reason she brought the measure comes down to just that —safety. The issue is personal to the Salem-area representative who recounted an accident in which her uncle was shot while deer hunting.
