Homeless hub: Sioux Falls attracts homeless as other cities close services, data show
City officials wary of regional communities busing in their homeless as shelters close

For the first time, city officials in Sioux Falls have data showing where people experiencing homelessness are coming from — and the numbers confirm what local service providers have long suspected: the city has become a regional hub for those in need.
That’s largely a result of the services available here. When other communities across the region lack shelters, food programs and social service networks, people gravitate to places where those resources exist.
In some cases, they’re even being transported into the city, said Michelle Treasure, Sioux Falls Homeless Services Coordinator, who told The Dakota Scout this week that a clearer look at the city’s indigent and homeless populations has confirmed “what we already know.”
