Homeless encampment compromise clears final hurdle in Sioux Falls
Council approves new ordinance aimed at eliminating tarps, tents in public spaces after weeks of emotional debate

The city of Sioux Falls will have new guidelines to follow when removing tents, tarps and other temporary shelters often built by homeless residents along the Big Sioux River.
The City Council on Tuesday approved an ordinance that requires police or other city workers to attempt to connect the person with appropriate social services, post a notice that the structure will be removed after 24 hours if no one is present, and ensure that any personal items of value are stored for up to 60 days.
