Historic sales tax cut earns support in final hours of South Dakota’s winter lawmaking session
Days of tense negotiations end with compromise package
PIERRE — The largest tax cut in South Dakota history, albeit temporary, is headed to Gov. Kristi Noem’s desk.
And though the Republican governor has threatened to veto any tax cut with a built-in expiration date, the reduction in the sales tax rate that will last until 2027 soared through the House and Senate on Thursday with veto-proof margins of support.
“I came here for four years and people thought I was crazy for thinking we could do this,” Rep. Chris Karr said from the House floor before the chamber voted 70-0 to adopt the cut.
