Highway Patrol will increase number of troopers assisting ICE with immigration enforcement
GOP candidates for governor want more local law enforcement agencies to work with ICE
The number of South Dakota Highway Patrol troopers set to participate in a federal program to assist in immigration enforcement will more than double, Gov. Larry Rhoden announced Monday.
Currently, 17 troopers have been trained under an Immigration and Customs Enforcement program that uses local law enforcement agencies to assist in enforcing immigration laws. The latest enrollment of troopers into the 287(g) program will increase that number to 41.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol started with five troopers in the program last summer.
