PIERRE – South Dakota would join a majority of states that are seeking to exclude soda as a qualified food under the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program with a bill that sailed through the House Health and Human Services Committee Tuesday.

The hearing for House Bill 1056 featured heavyweights in the state’s political system squaring off against each other. On one side were representatives of health care groups and some conservatives. On the other side were business groups and the Governor’s Office.
