From firearms to fees: These are the new laws going into effect July 1
State Legislature passed nearly 200 laws, include higher costs for driver's licenses and banning sanctuary cities
Nearly 200 new laws take effect in South Dakota on July 1, following a prolific legislative session last winter that saw many new lawmakers push to leave their imprint on state government.
In some ways, the wave of first-time legislators brought sweeping changes and reforms—case in point: a law that eliminated the use of eminent domain by carbon pipeline projects. Meanwhile, lawmakers killed a funding bill for a new men’s prison, forcing Gov. Larry Rhoden into a policy battle with the Legislature just days after taking office. The governor took a diplomatic approach, appointing a new study committee that included some of the most vocal opponents of the original proposal to build a new correctional complex south of Harrisburg.
