Lawmakers want more frequent reporting from Department of Education amid slumping reading, math proficiency

The state’s top legislative oversight committee moved Thursday to require the Department of Education to give an annual performance update amid slumping student achievement numbers.

The decision by the members of the Government Operations and Audit Committee came after Secretary of Education Joe Graves gave a lengthy presentation that included reading, math and attendance metrics. Those metrics have been softening, and Graves said the department is pursuing changes to reverse those trends.

A Mitchell lawyer who repeatedly filed frivolous legal claims, including a federal lawsuit against the South Dakota Supreme Court, will lose his license to practice law for 90 days.
