PIERRE – Should the names of lottery winners be private?

It’s a question the Legislature has been asked in the past. And the response has been, no, the games are public, and the names should also be public.

But that could change this year. A bill to that would allow winners to retain anonymity cleared a key Senate committee Thursday. The Senate Commerce and Energy Committee voted unanimously to send the measure to the Senate floor after no opponents testified against the measure, which is sponsored by Hartford Republican, Sen. Brent Hoffman.

Senate Bill 35 requires the South Dakota Lottery to get written consent from winners before any personal information can be made public. It would apply to scratch ticket games, video lottery winners and prizes won via online lotteries, which includes Powerball.
