Dog feces 'a foot deep' in SDSU police chief's animal cruelty investigation
Court documents allege German Shepherds living without heat in abandoned residence owned by Timothy Heaton
The arrest of South Dakota State University’s police chief on charges of animal cruelty was the result of a citizen’s complaint, Brookings Chief of Police Michael Drake said Monday in an email to The Dakota Scout.
Timothy Heaton, the longtime SDSU University Police Department chief, faces five felony charges of animal cruelty for his treatment of five German Shepherd Dogs. He was released from jail on a personal recognizance bond.
Following Heaton’s arrest Friday, SDSU named Deputy Chief Michael Kilber to serve in the role of interim chief. Kilber has been with the university’s police department since joining as a patrol officer in 1998. He has held the ranks of patrol sergeant and lieutenant before being promoted to deputy chief.
