The leading contender to be the next governor of South Dakota is putting his weight behind the Republican in the Sioux Falls mayor’s race.

Aberdeen businessman Toby Doeden, the first place finisher in Tuesday’s gubernatorial primary — earning a spot in a runoff against Gov. Larry Rhoden — announced his support for mayoral candidate Christine Erickson, who is also in a runoff election against mayoral candidate Democratic State Sen. Jamie Smith.
