The South Dakota Department of Corrections has authorized convicts to work at Custer State Park following a storm that caused extensive damages in the Black Hills.

Fifteen minimum-security offenders and four staff from the Rapid City Minimum Center were sent to the park Dec. 20. They helped remove fallen trees that were knocked down. The National Weather Service reported winds of up to 100 mph during the Dec. 18 event.

“I witnessed the damage first-hand on Saturday, and it is extensive,” Department of Corrections Secretary Nick Lamb said in a release. “Our crews have a big job ahead of them, but they are willing and able to assist and give back to society.”
