Ash borer invasion reaches Watertown
City skyline set to be transformed as thousands of trees destined for destruction
They’re heeere!
Emerald ash borers, invasive beetles from Asia that have been responsible for the deaths of tens of millions of ash trees over the past 23 years, have been found in Watertown, making the eastern South Dakota city the latest victim to fall to an invasion that has proven unstoppable.
The presence of emerald ash borers was first detected in North America in 2002 in southeast Michigan and they have been spreading ever since. It was first found in South Dakota in 2018 in Sioux Falls and was recently confirmed within the Watertown city limits by the South Dakota Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources.
