Gov. Kristi Noem stood on an Iowa stage Wednesday evening rallying supporters of former President Donald Trump to turn out to the country’s first contest in the 2024 presidential election season.

That the Republican governor stood without her ally and front runner for the GOP nomination at a Trump campaign-backed event is further fueling speculation the South Dakota politician is on the former president’s shortlist of potential running mates.

During the nearly hour-long event at a crowded Country Celebration Center in northern Sioux City, Noem called on Iowa Republicans to do everything they can to get Trump on the November ballot, particularly showing up at the Iowa caucuses on Jan. 15.

Just beyond the borders of the state she governs, the rally was one of several stops on an all-day swing through the Hawkeye state for the South Dakota governor in support of the Trump campaign. And though she used the opportunities before Iowa voters to blast Trump’s two most viable opponents, the day spent stumping in Iowa also appeared as an audition of sorts for her own potential candidacy for vice president.
