PIERRE — Two Pierre-area lawmakers who brought a measure changing the duration in which campaign signs can be up have bought themselves more time to display their own election signs.

The Hughes County Commission and Pierre City Commission moved to add about a month to the timeframe in which political signs can be displayed on private property, putting both governments in compliance with a state law that took effect on July 1.

The law, passed unanimously through the Legislature this year as House Bill 1069, requires municipalities to allow for the displaying of political signs at least 10 days before early voting begins, and gives those who display them at least a week after the election to take them down.
