A native and lifelong resident of Dell Rapids, Allen devoted his life to his family, his church, his community, the outdoors, and the practice of law. Allen’s funeral service will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 8, 2026 in the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids. Interment with military rites will be in the Dell Rapids Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5–7:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 7, 2026 in the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids.

Born in Dell Rapids on April 8, 1934, to Ellsworth and Catherine (Briley) Brown, Allen was the oldest grandson among John and Carrie Berdahl Brown’s 40 grandchildren and the first in his family to be a fifth-generation South Dakotan.

After graduating from Dell Rapids High School, he became the first in his family to attend college, majoring in business at the University of South Dakota (USD). He was initiated into Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity, where he formed lifelong friendships. In 1954, he paused his education to serve in the United States Army, spending 20 months in Germany. He later returned to USD, completing his Bachelor of Business Administration and earning his Juris Doctor.

In 1961, Allen joined the Van Buren and Vogt law firm in Dell Rapids, a firm originally established by Gustavus Krause in 1891. Over a distinguished 55-year career, he specialized in probate, real estate, and income tax law—the latter keeping him busy most weekends during tax season for decades. He served as attorney for the City of Dell Rapids and the Dell Rapids School District and was widely respected by his clients and peers across the South Dakota Bar. He was a member of the State Bar of South Dakota for more than 50 years, earning recognition for his distinguished service to the legal profession, his clients, and his community.

Allen also served the state of South Dakota as a longtime member of the State Electrical Commission, including more than two decades of service. In recognition of his contributions to the state and his profession, he was honored by the Governor, and in 2011, November 13 was proclaimed “Allen B. Brown Day” in South Dakota, recognizing his 50 years of legal service and lasting impact on his community.

Allen married Gloria Jones in 1968. He loved to share the story of how his fraternity brother, South Dakota State Senator Jerry Lammers, introduced him to Gloria, his wife’s sister. Married for 57 years, Allen’s love and admiration for Gloria was constant and evident. Together, they raised two children, Bob and Kathy, and were deeply involved in their activities in the Dell Rapids Public Schools. In later years, Allen and Gloria cherished time spent traveling to visit children, grandchildren, relatives, and friends.

Allen and Gloria were devoted members and leaders at Dell Rapids Lutheran Church. Allen sang faithfully in the choir, sharing his beautiful tenor voice. He also performed with the El Riad Shrine Chanters, alongside his brother, cousins, and fellow community members. The group earned five first-place gold medals at international Shrine competitions. As a Shriner, he was a familiar presence at the Shrine Circus, where he sang the national anthem and volunteered his time year after year.

An avid outdoorsman, Allen enjoyed hunting and fishing with his father, brothers, and son. Duck and pheasant hunting were treasured traditions. He also found joy in gardening and cultivating flowers.

Allen’s devotion to Dell Rapids was evident through his lifelong service. A member of the Lions Club since 1964, he was honored as a Melvin Jones Fellow, the organization’s highest recognition for humanitarian service, and was also recognized on the Lions Clubs International Foundation Honor Roll. His commitment to community service was further recognized by the Dell Rapids Jaycees with a Distinguished Service Award, and through his involvement with the American Legion and the Dell Rapids Sportsmen’s Club, where he was awarded lifetime membership.

Allen took pride in preserving the character of his hometown, advocating for the protection of historic buildings and playing a key role in efforts to keep Dell Rapids’ City Hall on Main Street. He was later invited to deliver the keynote address at its dedication—a fitting honor for someone so deeply invested in the life of the community.

A public servant, trusted counselor, and devoted family man, Allen lived a life defined by integrity, humility, and service.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Gail Munk Bares. Grateful to have shared his life are his wife, Gloria of Dell Rapids; son Bob Brown (Nancy) of Brentwood, CA; daughter Kathy Brandt (Wayne) of Tyler, MN; grandchildren Brady Park of Sioux Falls, Alison Vujnovic (Luke) of Tulsa, OK and Adam Brown (Tiffini) of Austin, TX; four great-grandchildren; siblings Donald Brown of Green Valley, AZ, Richard “Dick” Brown of Sioux Falls and Janet Brown of Sioux Falls; and twelve nieces and nephews.

The family of Allen B. Brown extends heartfelt gratitude to the Avera hospice team for their compassionate care, both at home and at the Dougherty Hospice House.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be directed to the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids, 701 N. Orleans, Dell Rapids, SD 57022.

Celebrate a life with the whole community in The Dakota Scout. her life will be 10:00am Saturday, May 2, 2026 at Fountain Springs Church 2100 North Plaza Dr. Rapid City, SD 57702. Visitation will begin one hour prior to the service at the church.

She was born on October 3, 1976, in Rapid City, to Diane and Shelby Burrus Sr. Sonja was a devoted wife, an extraordinary mother, a beloved daughter, sister, and a trusted nurse whose care extended far beyond her profession. She had a rare gift, she made people feel seen. Whether speaking with a lifelong friend or someone she had just met, Sonja created connection. She was often the last one at a gathering, taking the time to truly know people.

Her greatest pride and deepest joy was her family. As a wife and mother, Sonja gave everything she had, quietly, selflessly, and without expectation of recognition. She built a home filled with love, strength, and unwavering support. She raised her daughters to be strong, to know their worth, and to stand up for themselves, lessons that will carry forward as part of her lasting legacy.

Sonja was a nurse by profession, but a caregiver by nature. She was confident in her abilities and deeply committed to helping others, yet those closest to her knew that her greatest passion was caring for her family. She did countless unseen things every day, the small, steady acts of love that define a life well lived.

She faced her illness with remarkable strength. Even in her most difficult days, she chose hope. Even in pain, she continued to care about others—asking about their lives, offering empathy, and lifting those around her. Her fight was not loud, but it was powerful. She showed what true strength looks like: resilience, courage, and the decision to keep going, even when it was hard.

Sonja is survived by her loving husband, Jason; their daughters, Gabbie and Finley, who were the center of her world; her parents, Diane and Shelby Burrus Sr.; and her brother, Shelby Burrus Jr. She is also survived by extended family and many friends who loved her deeply. She leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, and connection. Those who knew her will remember her warmth, her ability to bring people together, and the way she made others feel valued and cared for. Haugen, age 87, Brandon, SD, died on Thursday, April 9, 2026, at Good Samaritan Luther Manor, in Sioux Falls, SD.

Wilma wished for no services. She has donated her body to the USD School of Medicine, Vermillion, SD, to further teach the medical field.

Wilma Harriett Riggs was born on May 14, 1938, in Cumberland, MD, to Russell Charles and Ida Mae (Petit) Riggs. She was one of several children; a life she would share in a few bits and pieces.

Wilma married Jim Varilek in February 1964 and soon had a daughter, Anna, and son, Frank. Throughout her life she worked many jobs in Yankton; Gambles, Human Services Center, Home Hospice Aide, Yankton Liquor Store, Tobacco Road, Wonder Bread, Walbaum Drug and Ahern Drug.

A kinder, gentler woman, there has never been. Truthful and honest were her life motto, and Wilma raised her children with those same traits.

Wilma married her second husband, Palmer Haugen, in July 1995, and found true love. Together they spent great times traveling to see grandchildren, Jason and Sara, and babysitting now and then. They enjoyed their time together. Palmer would shower her with roses and sweet nothings through their time together. She lost him in August 2006. In November 2008, her son passed.

In September 2009, Wilma moved from Yankton to Brandon to be with Anna and the family. As time passed, she battled diabetes, heart disease, broken bones, countless doctor appointments, constant and countless medications and tests.

Wilma suffered a heart attack in March 2024, and she said, “No more. No tests, no treatments, just no more.” She came to Good Samaritan Luther Manor under Hospice Care and adjusted well to her new family and caretakers. She rallied and graduated from the specialized care and they even threw her a party. Though in December 2025, she was readmitted to her devoted team.

Mama and I have shared so many journeys together, but this one is meant only for her. I love you, more than anything or anyone in my world. The reunion awaiting you, mama, at your new home will be amazing. You won’t miss where you’ve been but will rejoice in the fields of the Lord and wait for all of us to join you one day, in each, our own time. I will forever feel your kiss on my cheek. I love you, mama. Always and forever.

Wilma is survived by her daughter, Anna (Jon) Nadenicek; grandson, Jason (Casey) Nadenicek; granddaughter, Sara (Scott) Sommers; great grandsons, Jonah, Allen, and baby angel, William; Frank’s widow, Kim, and her family, Drew, Emily, and Ian; Palmer’s son, Terry (Denise) Haugen; and special friend, Carolyn Kleinschmit.

Wilma was preceded in death by her husband, Palmer Haugen; and son, Frank Varilek.

Celebrate a life with the whole community in The Dakota Scout. Alzheimer’s Disease, with her family by her side.

A Celebration of Wendy’s life will be held on Thursday, April 16, 2026 from 5-7 p.m. at Welter Funeral Home in Huron. Her family encourages all those who knew her to celebrate her life by visiting and telling stories of the Wendy we all knew and loved. A private family service will take place on Friday, April 17, 2026.

Wendy Lee was born on September 16, 1954 in Huron to parents Albert and Naomie (Stahl) Maass. She grew up in Yale and attended Yale and Iroquois Schools, graduating in 1972. After high school, Wendy attended Northwest College of Commerce in Huron. Wendy began a 35 plus year career with the federal government working for the Department of Agriculture at the federal building in Huron. Her career gave her many life-long friendships that she cherished throughout her life. Wendy retired in 2016.

Wendy married Randy L. Richards, and together they welcomed twin daughters, Megan and Brittany, in 1987. From that moment on, Wendy embraced her role as a loving, caring, and devoted mother. As the girls grew, she also “adopted” many of their friends, becoming a second mom to all. Whenever her daughters or their friends needed anything, Wendy was always there—without hesitation and with an open heart.

Wendy later married Dennis D. Olson, and together they shared many adventures. Whether traveling for work, attending Minnesota Twins games, or going on biking trips, they enjoyed spending time together and making memories along the way.

Wendy had a wide variety of hobbies and interests throughout her life. In her younger years, she enjoyed working with ceramics. She took great pride in decorating her home for every holiday, often keeping the kitchen counter stocked with sweet treats for anyone who stopped by. Wendy also loved cooking and baking—fitting for someone who definitely had a sweet tooth. Music was always a part of Wendy’s life and could often be heard playing in her home, adding warmth to everyday moments and special gatherings.

Later in life, Wendy became a proud Nana, a role she cherished deeply. She loved her grandsons more than anything, and they brought her endless joy and pride. She treasured every moment spent with them. She also enjoyed time with friends, especially during Bunco nights filled with laughter and good company, where music often added to the fun.

Above all else, Wendy loved spending time with her family—her girls, her grandsons, and her husband.

She is survived and will be missed immensely by her husband, Dennis of Huron; her daughters, Megan Hoffman of Eureka and Brittany (Keegan) McMahon of Huron; grandsons, Cohen and Theo Hoffman; step-son, Matt (Eryn) Olson of Iowa City, IA; her sister, Vicki Claassen of Brandon; her niece and nephew, Lisa Claasseen of Brandon and Casey Claassen of Sioux Falls. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother-in-law Dean Claassen.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Avantara for their loving care these past years. Their kindness will always be remembered.

Celebrate a life with the whole community in The Dakota Scout. Martin, 61, Sioux Falls, SD, who departed this world on March 30, 2026, surrounded by the family she so fiercely loved.

A Celebration of Life Open House will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 11, 2026, at Heartland Funeral Home in Brandon with a Memorial Service beginning at 2:00 p.m.

Sara Louise Rosenbaum was born on May 23, 1964, in South Dakota to Arnold and Kathryn (Vondrak) Rosenbaum. Sara was raised in Jefferson, SD with her siblings. Sara was a woman of remarkable strength, a tireless work ethic, and the guiding heartbeat of her family.

Sara was a pillar of reliability and integrity. She spent 25 years as a valued member of the Ecolab team, where she was known for her unwavering dedication. She approached her career with the same determination and resilience that defined her character, earning the deep respect of those who worked alongside her.

Beyond her professional achievements, Sara found her greatest happiness in the beauty of the natural world. She lived for the warmth of the sun—whether she was relaxing on the beach, tending to her garden, or embarking on a long-awaited road trip. Her spirit truly shone through the eyes of her grandchildren. Known affectionately as “Grandma Chewy,” she was an adventurer at heart who delighted in hunting for bugs, reptiles, and amphibians with her grandkids. She taught them to find wonder in the small, crawling things and to appreciate the magic in everyday moments. She also enjoyed the Buffalo Bills and riding her Harley Davidson.

Sara’s greatest masterpiece was the family she nurtured. She is survived by her children, who were her pride and joy, Christopher Martin, Steven Martin, and Tashia (Wes) Pfaff. She remains a cherished light in the lives of her grandchildren, Max and Zoey Pfaff, and Samuel and Isabelle Martin. Sara also leaves behind her fiancé, Tony Tulio, who brought her immense love and companionship, and her two loyal dogs, Chewbacca and Sadie. She is also survived by her siblings, Keith Rosenbaum, Sheri (Dennis) Pitz, Star Dahm, Mike (Kris) Rosenbaum, and Charles (Stacey Chavez) Rosenbaum.

She now joins her parents, Arnold and Kathryn Rosenbaum; and her siblings, Joseph Rosenbaum and Tammy Painter, in eternal rest.

Sara will be remembered for her unwavering strength, her infectious warmth, and the boundless love she gave so freely. While her presence will be deeply missed, her legacy lives on in every garden bloom, every beach sunrise, and the many lives she touched.

Celebrate a life with the whole community in The Dakota Scout. family will be hosting a funeral service, which will be held on Saturday, April 11, at Renner Lutheran Church. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m., with services to follow at 11:00 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Renner Lutheran Church. Flowers may be sent to the church the day of the service.

A luncheon will be held in the church basement following the service for a time of gathering and sharing stories.

Tommy was a man who lived fully, loved deeply, and left a lasting impression on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. He proudly served in the National Guard as a survey computer specialist and was recognized as a sharpshooter with the M14 rifle. He worked at John Morrell in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, where he dedicated many years before retiring.

On June 27, 1970, he married the love of his life, Pam, his high school sweetheart, and from that young love grew a lifelong bond.

Together, they built a life on the farm, raising their two children. Family was everything to Tom, and he showed it not just in words, but in the life he lived every day.

He found his greatest joy at the Round Barn Farm in Renner, a place that was more than just land. There, he boarded horses for much of his life and built countless lifelong friendships. Whether you met him at the farm or at the Red Eye Bar, where he enjoyed his Brandy and good company, you quickly knew you were in the presence of someone unforgettable.

He loved to travel, golf, and spend time with his best friend Denny—often sharing a cigarette and good conversation. He had a personality that was equal parts generous and ornery. He was the kind of man who would give you the shirt off his back—but might give you a hard time while doing it.

He had a special love for dogs throughout his life, especially his most recent companion, Sammy, who passed just last year. Sammy was never far from his side—usually found sitting at his feet and barking at Grandma’s door.

Tom is survived by his children, Jeri Jo Sorum and Brett Sorum; his grandchildren, Cierra (Brady) Cuka, Zeya (Chloe) Sorum, Chloey (Colt) Sorum, and Nick Asmussen; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Marvin and Shirley Sorum; his sister, Loxie; and his beloved wife, Pam.

He left this world the same way he lived—on his own terms, surrounded by love, and leaving behind stories that will be told for generations.

Celebrate a life with the whole community in The Dakota Scout. The date of the funeral service has changed. A Visitation will be held 5-7 PM, Monday, April 27, 2026 at St Michael’s Catholic Church, Sioux Falls, SD. A Celebration of Life will be held, 11 AM, Tuesday, April 28, 2026 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Sioux Falls, SD.

William (Bill) James Bennett was born April 6, 1949 in Ponca, Neb., to James E. and Eva Faye (Olander) Bennett. He died at Ava’s House in Sioux Falls, S.D., on March 19, 2026, 12 weeks after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer; he was 76.

Bill was a son, husband, father, brother, uncle and cousin. For the first four years of his life he lived on the family farm in the Newcastle, Neb., area. The family moved to the westside of Sioux City, Iowa, eventually settling in the Leeds area where he spent his formative years. Bill attended St. Boniface and St. Michael’s (Leeds) grade schools. In fourth grade he contracted polio and was homeschooled. Bill graduated from Heelan High School in 1967. He was a proud member and starting right guard/linebacker on the state-ranked 1966 Crusader football team.

Bill first met Maureen Kenney when they were freshmen at Briar Cliff College in Sioux City in 1967. They were married in September 1971 in St. Paul, Minn. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from Briar Cliff. Bill joined the U.S. Army Reserves during the Vietnam era and served for six years, being honorably discharged as Staff Sergeant (E-6).

Bill and Maureen had three children: Amy, Christine and William, Junior. His career in the hospitality industry began at the Sheraton Warrior Hotel in Sioux City, starting when he was a sophomore in high school. After graduating from Briar Cliff, he continued in full-service hotel management roles in 23 hotels in 16 cities in 11 states, as well as two freestanding restaurants and a city-owned convention center.

The Bennett family moved to Sioux Falls in 1991. Bill’s last hotel role was as General Manager of the Sheraton Sioux Falls Hotel and Sioux Falls Convention Center. He retired in 2008. When he was 60, he received a master’s degree in Higher Education from South Dakota State University. Bill embarked on a second career as a professor at Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall, Minn., teaching hotel administration courses in SMSU’s four-year hospitality program. Bill retired from teaching in 2013.

He considered himself a lifelong learner. After retirement Bill took classes through Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) and was part of several writing groups. He delved into genealogy of the Bennett/Olander families and combined several memoirs into an autobiography. He was proud of his heritage: Irish, Scottish, Scandinavian, German, French and a small amount of African.

In retirement, Bill and Maureen enjoyed time with their four grandchildren: Brandt, Emerson, Franklin and Wesleigh. They traveled with college friends to warmer climates in the wintertime. In 2015 Bill and Maureen took a trip to Ireland, visiting many places that Bill had researched about in his genealogy pursuits.

Bill mentored many students and created opportunities to expand hospitality education at K-12 and post-secondary levels through service on a number of advisory boards. In his career Bill also served on various hotel association boards throughout the Midwest. “Mr. B” was a tough boss who cared deeply about his teams and expected great things from them — but only because he knew they were capable. Bill’s three children each had the “opportunity” to work for him in various roles as well.

Bill loved dogs and had at least one at nearly every stage of his life, often saying he liked dogs “better than most people.” Bill was an avid sports fan, especially for the University of Iowa Hawkeyes, the South Dakota State University Jackrabbits and the Heelan High Crusaders. In his life he accumulated numerous sports collectables and vintage sports memorabilia.

A lifelong Roman Catholic, Bill sang in the choir at St. Michael Church in Sioux Falls after retirement, returning to his high school Glee Club roots. He was also part of the Village Singers, a collective at the Village Cooperative where Bill and Maureen lived.

To say he was passionate about conservative politics would be an understatement. Bill lived out the quote often attributed to Winston Churchill: “If you are not liberal when you are young, you have no heart. If you are not conservative when old, you have no brain.”

Bill is survived by his wife of 54 years, Maureen, Sioux Falls; children Amy Bennett Smolik, Tea, S.D.; Christine (Peter) Bisson, Manchester, N.H.; Bill, Jr., Austin, Texas; grandchildren Brandt and Emerson Smolik, Tea, S.D.; and Franklin and Wesleigh Bisson, Manchester, N.H.; sister Madonna (Scott) Castle, Merrill, Iowa; brother Mark (Becky) Bennett, Winston-Salem, N.C.; brothers-in-law Bob Kenney (Marla Cummings), Oakdale, Minn.; Michael Kenney, St. Louis Park, Minn.; and sister-in-law Monica (Al) Kenney Tolson, Collegeville, Penn. He also leaves behind several nieces and nephews and many friends he considered family.

Bill was preceded in death by his five infant sisters, parents, in-laws Bob and RoseMary Kenney, and son-in-law, Matt Smolik.

The family wishes to thank the amazing caregivers from Ava’s House and the Sanford Oncology floor who made Bill’s stay as comfortable as it could be.

Celebrate a life with the whole community in The Dakota Scout. on July 27, 1946, in Winner, South Dakota, to Walter and Mary Jane Krauss. She grew up on the family farm outside Winner, where she was raised alongside her two younger sisters, Shirley (Bob) Miller and Donna (Mick) Heying. After graduating from high school in Winner, she attended Southern State College in Springfield, South Dakota, studying math and earning her teaching certificate — though teaching wasn’t a true calling for her.

That calling arrived in the form of Dave Clauson, whom she met when he came through Winner for work. The two were married on March 1, 1969, beginning a devoted partnership that would span 56 wonderful years. Carol made the leap from small-town Winner to the “big city” of Sioux Falls with characteristic determination, as she and Dave built their life together.

At the heart of that life was her family. Carol was, in every sense of the word, a remarkable wife, mother, and homemaker. She brought warmth, order, and love to everything she did — keeping an immaculate home, ensuring her family always sat down to a good homecooked meal, and clothing Dave and their children in outfits crafted by her own skilled hands at the sewing machine.

Carol had a natural gift for numbers and was a born accountant. She put that talent to work as an in-home math tutor for her kids, a relentless coupon shopper who could stretch every dollar to its fullest, and the meticulous efforts behind her nearly annual garage sales — events that involved weeks of careful planning, precise pricing, and product presentation that would make any retailer proud.

Her entrepreneurial spirit found its finest expression in her Cabbage Patch doll-clothing business, a labor of love that kept her sewing late into the evenings, packaging her creations, and crafting newspaper ads…the original Etsy! It was exactly the kind of endeavor that suited her — creative, industrious, and entirely her own.

Carol also treasured her weekly women’s bowling league which provided longtime friends and gave her competitive streak a time to shine. Most of all, she cherished every moment spent with her five grandchildren — playing cards, games of Yahtzee, and cheering from the stands at countless sporting events. Even as memory loss presented its challenges in her later years, she could still hold her own at the UNO table — a testament to her resilience.

Carol is survived by her children, Brian (Janeen) Clauson and Angie (Jim) Flanigan; her grandchildren, Alex and Erin Clauson, Zach (Kara) Flanigan, Eric Flanigan, and Macyn (Ethan) Burson; and her sister, Shirley (Robert) Miller. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 56 years, Dave Clauson; and her sister, Donna (Mick) Heying.

A visitation, with family present, will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday, March 27th, 2026, followed by a service at 11:00 AM, at Miller Funeral Home - Westside Chapel (6200 W. 41st St) in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Interment will take place at Hills of Rest Cemetery in Sioux Falls.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Carol’s honor may be directed to the American Cancer Society or the Alzheimer’s Association.

Celebrate a life with the whole community in The Dakota Scout. Thomas McGovern, Sioux Falls, SD, went to Heaven on March 13, 2026. His sudden passing took away our movie partner, our cheerleader, and our hero. He rarely missed anything that we were doing. We want to tell you about Uncle Brett and how everyone who knew him will miss him until we see him again in Heaven.

Brett Thomas McGovern was born on March 20,1984 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota to Stephanie McGovern and Tom McGovern, our grandparents. Our mom, Abigail, was born in 1988. They grew up together and were each other’s best friends. Brett graduated from Sioux Falls Lincoln High School in 2003. During his younger years he worked with our Grandpa Tom at Minnehaha County Club. Uncle Brett was pretty smart when it came to technology and computer stuff. After graduating high school, he attended college at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in Spearfish, South Dakota.

When he returned to Sioux Falls, he worked with his mom at Hutchinson Technology and went on to work for various technology companies including Capital One, Knology and Century Link. Uncle Brett made many friends throughout the years working for these companies. Over the years he found happiness when he gathered with friends to play Pathfinder or Magic. He was always very warm, kind and touched the hearts of everyone around him. In death Brett was able to give to others by being a donor.

Uncle Brett was at our house all the time to play games or just hang out. If you ever needed to know about the movies, he was your guy. One of our favorite things to do with Uncle Brett was to go to the movies (weekly sometimes), and when we got there, the staff would greet him by name. Taking a road trip to the outdoor theater at Luverne, MN was always a summer highlight. He had great love of all genres of music; you name it he liked it.

Another one of Brett’s passions was photography, he carried his camera wherever he went. He treasured capturing the joy and laughter of us along with family reunions and family holidays. Uncle Brett traveled to the state of Maine in 2024 to capture pictures of the solar eclipse, one of his many trips to other states to capture that perfect picture.

One of his favorite places was Prairie Village in Madison, SD. From the time he was a little boy, he “vacationed” there with family and friends, especially his grandparents, Myron and Clara Downs.

Uncle Brett McGovern was a member of the Restoration Baptist Church of Sioux Falls. He was baptized by submersion in October of 2000. Brett was the local vice-president for Communications Workers of America (CWA) LOCAL 7500. He also served as a Union Steward, was on the E Board, and representative of the AFL-CIO, which gave him the opportunity to travel to Pierre many times.

If you ask us, he was the best uncle any kid could ask for. He listened to us, he played with us, but most of all he loved us with all his heart. And we love him with all our hearts, and we will live our lives to honor him. We will always remember how you made us feel…loved. Until we see you in Heaven, “We love you Uncle Brett.”

Our Uncle Brett is survived by his mother, Stephanie McGovern (Clark Fairchild), his father Tom McGovern (Jackie Blankenship); sisters Abby (Sean) Huus, Crystal (Allen) Kekahuna and children; and us: Landon, Paige, Isaiah, and Olive; Grandmother Clara Downs, special Aunt Mary Ann (Jim) Weber; and Uncle Mark (Kim) Downs; Aunt Mary Swenson. He is also survived by cousins who will miss him and his best friend from high school and his longtime roommate, David Weiss and his mom Deb Hewitt.

Greeting Uncle Brett in heaven: maternal Grandpa Myron Downs; paternal Grandparents Gerald and Goldie McGovern; Uncle Jerry McGovern; Aunt Pat Calkins and many more who welcomed him home.

We are grateful and appreciative of all our family and friends who have offered your support with prayers, food, and kind words during this time. To all of Brett’s gaming, movie, union and work friends, thank you. It is a blessing to know that so many lives were touched by Brett. Our faith in our Lord will guide us through this new journey in life missing Brett Thomas McGovern.

“One day closer to seeing you again….”

A Visitation will be held 3 PM, Monday, March 23 at Heritage Funeral Home, followed by a Funeral Service at 4 PM.

Celebrate a life with the whole community in The Dakota Scout. Hospice Cottages on Monday, March 16, 2026. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, March 23, 2026, at the St. Therese Catholic Church, Sioux Falls. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., Sunday, March 22, 2026, at the George Boom Funeral Home & On-Site Crematory. A Liturgical Wake Service with Rosary will begin at 7:00 p.m. following the visitation.

In Lieu of flowers, please direct memorials to the Thesenvitz Family for his children or the St. Therese Little Flower Knights of Columbus Council 6605.

Christopher was born on September 25, 1985, in Elgin, Illinois, to Michael and Theresa Thesenvitz, grew up in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He attended Franklin Elementary, Whittier Middle School, and Washington High School, where he was active in theatre, band, and accelerated academics. It was during marching band, serving as Drum Major that he met his future wife, Laura, the color guard captain. Their high school relationship was the start of a lifelong love story.

In March of 2004, Christopher began his military career by joining the South Dakota Air National Guard, 114th Fighter Wing, as a crew chief. Following high school graduation, he completed Basic Military Training at Lackland Air Force Base and technical training at Sheppard Air Force Base and Luke Air Force Base. Early in his career, he received the nickname “Taz” from his first flight chief, who jokingly preferred it to pronouncing his last name, a name that stuck and became well known and respected across the flightline.

In 2006, he was hired full-time as a Dedicated Crew Chief. His leadership, steady presence, and deep commitment to excellence led him to the role of Flightline Expeditor in September 2017, and later to Production Superintendent in February 2022. Throughout his 21 years of service, Christopher deployed multiple times overseas as well as other in-country locations in support of training and operational missions. He was deeply proud to serve his country and especially valued the Airmen he mentored and led. He was medically retired in October 2025 after 21 years of honorable service.

Christopher and Laura were married in 2010 and built a life centered on faith, family, and devotion to one another. He was a proud and devoted father to Tristan (Gosch), Claire, and Henry. Nothing brought him greater joy than supporting his children in their sports, activities, and everyday moments.

A man of strong faith, Christopher was deeply involved in his parish and community. He was an active member of the Knights of Columbus, serving as a 3rd Degree Knight with the Little Flower Council 6605 and as a 4th Degree Knight with the Bishop Paul V. Dudley Assembly. He believed in service not only to his country, but to his church and community.

He is survived by his loving wife, Laura; his children, Tristan (Gosch), Claire, and Henry, of whom he was incredibly proud; his parents, Michael and Theresa Thesenvitz; his sister Andrea (William) Leesch; his brother Brent (Kelli) Knaeble; his sister Carissa (Landon) Leverenz; his grandmother, Linda Lewis (Thesenvitz); and several nieces and nephews whom he adored. He also leaves behind cherished in-laws, aunts, uncles, extended family, and several friends who will always be considered family.

He was preceded in death by his three infant unborn angels; his maternal grandparents, Edmund and Valentina Krych; his paternal grandparents, Arthur and Darlene Thesenvitz; and his infant brother, Kenneth.

May we all honor Christopher by following these words quoted from his closing remarks from his retirement speech that is a true example of how he endeavored to lead life with hope and positivity: “Find the blessings always and live each day to the fullest not knowing what the next will bring. Only God knows what the next day holds, so all we can do is trust in His plan for each of us. Thank you, and God bless.”

Celebrate a life with the whole community in The Dakota Scout.
