As executive director of the Black Hills Parks and Forest Association, I work closely with the public lands that define western South Dakota. From the Black Hills National Forest to the surrounding parks and grasslands, these landscapes are central to our economy and our way of life.

Unfortunately, they are also aging. Years of deferred maintenance have created a backlog of needed repairs across the country, including here in South Dakota. Roads, trails, buildings and critical systems all require attention. When maintenance is delayed, costs increase and access can be limited.

The America the Beautiful Act offers a clear path forward. This legislation would reauthorize and strengthen the National Parks and Public Land Legacy Restoration Fund, which has already delivered meaningful results since its creation in 2020. It would extend funding through 2033 and increase annual investment to better address ongoing needs.

South Dakota’s Simeon Birnbaum continues his blaze to glory, winning the NCAA national title in the outdoor 1,500-meter race. The performance put the University of Oregon sophomore into the “annals” of the school’s vaunted distance running heritage, according to a release from the school’s track team.

The national title came two months after the Rapid City Stevens graduate set a collegiate record in the 1,500. And it came after a “furious finishing kick.” He finished in 3:36.05, five seconds slower than his record-setting time set in April.

Despite being the record holder, Birnbaum admitted to being nervous ahead of the nationals, which were held in Eugene, Ore. He said he barely slept the night before the race, fearing he might put in a disappointing performance.

Republican Senate candidates should campaign against Democrats who have blocked the SAVE Act in nearly half a dozen votes on the Senate floor, Republican Majority Leader John Thune said.

Thune said provisions in the act are supported by 80 percent to 85 percent of voters. One of those voters is President Donald Trump, who has pressured Senate Republicans for its passage.

Republican activists have also rallied around the SAVE Act. The full measure includes five provisions, including three related to voting: a government photo ID to vote, proof of citizenship when people register to vote and the elimination of mail-in ballots except for voters who are ill, disabled, traveling or in the military.

Political speech will be restricted at the revived Independence Day parade set to take place next weekend in downtown Sioux Falls.

And the volunteer committee behind the policy to bar special interest activist organizations representation in the July 4 parade is now facing accusations of excluding groups that don’t align with conservative politics.

However, the Sioux Falls Independence Day Parade Committee (SFIDPC) has denied not just the progressive activist group that publicly griped about being denied a spot in the Saturday morning hour-long street festival that’s right now is set to feature more than 80 entries by area businesses, service groups, candidates for elected office and political party organizations recognized by the South Dakota Secretary of State.

As CEO of the Mount Rushmore Society, I have the privilege of working every day to support one of America’s most recognized landmarks. Mount Rushmore stands as a symbol of our nation’s history, but it is also a working piece of infrastructure that requires ongoing care and investment.

Right now, there is an opportunity before Congress to build on a successful bipartisan effort that has already delivered real results for South Dakota. On July 28, the future of South Dakota will effectively be decided. It won’t happen during the general election in November but rather in a low-turnout, mid-summer Republican run-off for governor. Given the current political reality of our state — with even the number of registered independents exceeding registered Democrats by 26 percent to 22 percent(!) — it seems obvious that the candidate who wins the GOP nomination is virtually guaranteed to be our next chief executive.

That is why the two of us — a former Democratic chief of staff to a U.S. senator and a former Republican mayor of Sioux Falls, both now registered independents — are making an unusual and urgent appeal to Democrats, independents and Libertarians: It is time to temporarily change your voter registration to Republican so you can vote in this run-off. And if anyone wants to vote for Democratic nominee Dan Ahlers in the general election, they can still do so.

When Joseph M. Marshall III passed away on April 18, 2025, the Lakota Nation lost one of its most influential modern storytellers. The author, historian, educator, activist and cultural guardian spent decades preserving Lakota history through books, film, education and mentorship. Yet even in his final hours, Marshall was still working.

According to Lucid House Publishing, Marshall completed the manuscript for Blood on the Dress, the final installment in his acclaimed Smoky River Suspense Series, on the very day of his passing.

For a man whose life’s work centered on preserving Indigenous voices, challenging stereotypes and protecting cultural memory, the symbolism is difficult to ignore. His final completed work was not a retrospective memoir or historical account. Instead, it was a contemporary story confronting one of the most urgent crises facing Native communities today.

Southeast Technical College Graduate/Career Outcomes are one of the most important attainment measures for STC. Within 6 months of graduation, our graduates are working in South Dakota and in-field, utilizing the knowledge and hands-on experience needed to perform for our region’s top employers. This is the essence of the STC Mission and Vision. The outreach and follow-up needed to produce the report is time well spent considering the importance of the SD Board of Technical Education attainment goal of employing graduates in SD and in field. Our outcome results are also found in other external reports for public viewing. The Department of Education monitors gainful employment for all educational institutions to ensure graduates are employed in steady work that enables self-sufficiency.

• Nearly all questions asked had improved scores over the 2023 survey.

Action ST01033 Vice President of Finance Christine Goldsmith provided the Proposed FY27 Budget Final Adoption Report (MRF# ST752). The report highlighted a proposed total budget of $61 million, which includes approximately $19 million dedicated to construction and facility remodeling. This represents an overall budget increase of 2.9% compared to the prior year. Additionally, the proposal includes a 3% salary increase for all faculty and staff, excluding adjuncts, and a one-time increase of approximately 60% in state-funded equipment grants.

b. Basketball Court: The City received 3 bids for putting in a concrete basketball court in where the current sand volleyball court is. Edward Clark made a motion to approve Utecht Construction to complete the project as his bid was the lowest and is local at $41,630. Seconded by Eric Comes. Kevin Hoekman, Senior Planner, was present for the public hearing and gave the second reading for rezoning 26-05 to consider an amendment to 2001 Revised Joint Zoning Ordinance for Minnehaha County and the City of Dell Rapids to rezoned from the RR-5 Rural Residential District to C Commercial District. The property is legally described as Overvaag Tracts 10, 11, 12, and 13 SW1/4 Section 8 and N1/2 Section 17 all within T104N-R49W Dell Rapids Township and is located three quarters of a mile west of Dell Rapids along South Dakota Highway 115. The Joint County and City of Dell Rapids Planning Commission approved the Rezoning 26-05 request unanimously.

Chair Karsky asked for the proponents and opponents to speak on the topic. The following proponents spoke: Bryan Breitling, Kathy Fiegen, Brian Phelps, Dan Klein, Thomas Earley, and Dennis Daugaard. Melissa Denoon and Sheba Schlaikjer spoke in opposition to the rezoning.

The Court, having considered the pleadings of Plaintiff including the affidavit of counsel, in support of serving process on Defendants by publication, finds and orders as follows:

It appearing that Plaintiff maintains the Complaint against Defendants, BKW Transportation LLC being an Oklahoma limited liability company while Kenneth Dwain Knapp is the member thereof, and

It further appearing that in February 2023, Defendants entered into a certain contract with Plaintiff, while present in Minnehaha County, South Dakota and further expressly agreeing that this Court shall be the proper venue and have personal jurisdiction over said defendants in the event of any legal action arising out of the contract between Plaintiff and Defendants, and

It appearing further that after the contract was cancelled by Plaintiff in November 2023, based on damages to cargo and unresolved claims and credits as outlined in the Complaint, Defendant Knapp is no longer residing in Moore, Oklahoma, and his current location is unknown to Plaintiff, and for good cause, it is now

ORDERED, Plaintiff shall proceed to give notice of the commencement of this action, directed to Defendants BKW and Knapp, by publishing notice to both of said Defendants in a newspaper published at Sioux Falls, South Dakota, such publication to proceed not less than once a week and to continue for four successive weeks, with proofs thereof to be provided to the Court in due course; and

You must appear at the time and place set forth above to show cause, if any you have, why said Child should not be found abused/neglected and the prayer of said Petition granted or said Child otherwise dealt with. Failure to appear is an admission to the allegation(s) contained in the Petition. You are further notified that the termination of parental rights is a possible remedy of these proceedings and that you and the above-named Child have the right to have an attorney present at all stages of the proceedings.

As I see my daughter, Christine Erickson, seek the office of mayor of Sioux Falls, I find myself reflecting not on politics but on the values that have guided her throughout her life.

Long before Christine held elected office, led organizations or stood before audiences, she was a young girl with a caring heart and a deep concern for others. She was the child who checked on neighbors, volunteered her time and understood that leadership begins with service.

She also learned early how to be tough. Growing up with three brothers, Christine quickly learned how to stand her ground, speak her mind and never back down from a challenge. While she inherited her mother’s kindness and compassion, she developed a resilience that has served her well throughout her life. Anyone who knows Christine understands that she is thoughtful and caring, but she is also determined and willing to make difficult decisions when necessary.

Robert Allan Natz “Bob,” 92, of Sioux Falls passed away on June 13, 2026. He was born on Aug. 19, 1933, in Sioux Falls.

Bob attended Cathedral High school where he met the love of his life, Betty Hauk; they married shortly after graduation in June 1955 and celebrated 61 years of marriage until Betty’s passing in November 2016.

Robert is survived by his sons, Michael Natz (Naomi) of Fresno, Calif., Stephen Natz (Julie Miller) of Sioux Falls, and Robert Natz (Julie) of Sioux Falls; three grandchildren, Christopher Natz (Shaun) of Sioux Falls, Alexander Natz (Kandace) and Elliott Natz (Kelsey Phillips) of Missoula, Mont.; three great-grandchildren, Hadley, Harper, and Henry, of Missoula, Mont.; and his brothers, Bill Natz of San Jose, Calif., and Daryl (Kit) and Marilyn Natz of Minneapolis.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty; father, Christian Natz; his mother, Orpha Natz; his sisters, Eunice Zerfas, Lois Zerfas and Zita Brandenburg; and his eldest brother, Cletus Natz.

Visitation will be held on Monday, June 22, at Barnett-Lewis Funeral Home from 5 to 7 p.m. The Committal service for Bob will be on Tuesday, June 23, at St. Michael Cemetery at 1 p.m.

Marlene (Bredberg) Frieh passed away May 9, 2026, in Ocala, Fla., at the age of 94. Marlene was born in Britton, S.D., July 22, 1931, the fifth of seven children. She grew up in the small town of Kidder, raised her family in Aberdeen, then moved to Sioux Falls, where she worked for many years. In 1996, she retired to Ocala.

Preceding her in death were her parents Clarence and Madeline Bredberg, and siblings: Marilyn, Harold, Neil, Maureen, Marcine and David. Surviving Marlene are sons David of St. Louis Park, Minn., and Kirk (Shirley), grandchildren, Emma and Katie (Robyn), and great-granddaughter, Gabby, all of Buffalo, N.Y. Marlene also was survived by nieces and nephews.

She will be laid to rest July 25, 2026, at Groton Union Cemetery in Groton.

Some observations on recent South Dakota political activities.

On the Republican side, as we’ve gotten the first of our primary elections behind us and gearing up for the run-offs, what is glaring is that it used to be “all politics is local”; today, it’s more like “all politics is national.”

Almost all South Dakota statewide and national office Republican candidates went out of their way to position themselves as Trump-aligned or at least give the appearance of such. Gubernatorial candidate Toby Doeden, for one, is building on his “outsider” candidacy, formed in the image and likeness of Donald Trump. It feels like a Doeden “mini-me” avatar of DJT! Trump endorsements of the likes of Ken Paxton in Texas and other Senatorial candidates are parroted by support/endorsements funneled through Doeden’s Dakota First Action PAC. Loyalty is the ultimate litmus test.

Unfortunately, South Dakota Democrats suffer from a similar ilk. As much enthusiasm, or at least respect, was on display during former President Joe Biden’s recent keynote at the McGovern Day dinner. The question that should haunt South Dakota Democrats is whether anything was learned from the 2024 election. Say what you will about dislike for Trump corruption and policies, he was returned to power because of rabid dislike for Biden, Democrats and key elements of their agenda, particularly in the areas of immigration (southern border) and the economy. And Biden waited far too long to exit the race.

In my opinion, DJT has wasted the nation’s time and attention span on a slew of personal obsessions: tariffs, Greenland, a ballroom, retribution, the outcome of the 2020 election and an ill-considered war. Pendulums swing, and the extent to which that happens (or doesn’t) will be the story of the midterms.

Federal authorities identified a second suspect in connection with the disappearance and death of a Sioux Falls girl Thursday.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Iowa also indicated that 14-year-old McKenna Wendel had been transported with the intent to engage in criminal sexual activity.
